How to read these prices

Spot is the nearest SAFEX contract month, in rand per ton. Day is the change from the previous trading day. The forward curve shows the prices trading for delivery in the coming months.

SAFEX is the grain market on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and the reference most South African maize and soybean trade is priced from. Prices here are the day's closing trades, shown for reference only; they are not an offer.

How we price

We quote off the SAFEX reference for the product, plus logistics to your delivery point, so you receive one delivered price. Contracts can be spot or monthly rolling, with a delivery calendar agreed up front. We own the product we sell, so you deal with one counterparty from farm to delivery.

What moves the maize price

South African maize prices respond to the local crop estimate and weather through the season, demand from neighbouring countries, the rand against the US dollar, and international maize prices. Read our market insights for the current outlook.

Common questions

What is the maize price per ton today?

The table on this page shows the latest SAFEX closing trades for white maize, yellow maize and soybeans in rand per ton, updated every weekday after the grain market closes.

Why is a delivered quote different from the SAFEX price?

SAFEX is a reference price for delivery at a set point in South Africa. A delivered quote adds transport and handling to your site or border, and depends on grade, volume and timing.

When are the prices updated?

Every weekday at 15:00, after the SAFEX grain market closes at 12:00. On weekends and public holidays the last trading day is shown.

Why do white and yellow maize prices differ?

White maize is mainly milled for human food and yellow maize mainly goes into animal feed, so each has its own supply and demand. The gap between them changes with crop sizes, regional demand and imports.

What is the forward curve?

The prices SAFEX is trading for delivery in future months. Buyers use it to see where the market expects prices to go and to plan or lock in purchases.
